BVD Testing To Be Made Compulsory 21/01/2014

The Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Michelle O’Neill,  has recently announced that her Department will now work towards the introduction of legislation for the compulsory testing of bovines for Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV).

This legislation will result in the BVD eradication programme which began with a voluntary phase on 1st  January 2013 becoming compulsory.  While a definite date in 2014 for the introduction of this legislation is not yet available, this announcement removes uncertainty as to whether the programme would become compulsory.

In light of this announcement, AHWNI and the BVD Implementation Group strongly encourages all farmers to join the programme now by purchasing tissue sample enabled tags and using these on all calves born in 2014.
